Most people lose weight on a vegan lifestyle with little or no effort. Odds are, if you’re eating vegan food after being on a standard western diet, you’ll lose weight just by the dietary changes. These days, though, it’s not quite so automatic that vegan eating leads to healthier living since there are now so many vegan options in processed foods. Technically, you could eat nothing but Oreos and peanut butter and still be vegan, but you probably wouldn’t lose much weight. Vegan or not, if your eating is 80% plants, you’ll probably lose weight and are unlikely to have any nutritional deficiencies.
I’ve attended a few vegan meetups in different cities. A vegan group looks diverse. There are people of all ethnicities, body types, genders, you name it. So I’d say no, most vegans are not fairly thin. I met some overweight vegans, but I myself happen to be a very thin vegan. This has nothing to do with my diet, I’ve been underweight before going vegan. Now I finally broke into the healthy BMI range. And of course, there are vegan athletes and bodybuilders who are anything but thin. The bottom line is, while a vegan diet is typically lower in calories, you still can tailor it to your needs. Losing weight, gaining weight, building muscle – all of it is possible for a vegan.
