  1. If you’re not allergic to bees, a sting will hurt because poison is injected into the skin. As it heals the skin may swell and then itch. If breathing is affected then the person is allergic and needs an emergency epinephrine shot. The first bee sting does not determine an allergy. Each subsequent stink can be more severe. My daughter Laura helped me with my hives for 6 years before having a very serious allergic reaction to 16 bee stings. I bought her a bee suit and gloves after that and keep her at a distance from the hives just to bring the honey inside the house.

  2. Being bitten by a bee feels like a moderately painful pinch. The bite is usually given as a means of hanging on while the stinger does its work. Some species just sting and fly away without biting, while related species, such as yellow jackets, cling on with mandibles and legs while delivering repetitive stings. It is nice to only get a bite from such creatures. I’ve noticed that many people don’t distinguish bites from stings when they speak of their encounters. It may be that education in such matters is something that must be self-taught.
