It depends. Weight gain of any kind, be it muscle or fat, is all about calories in and calories out. If you eat at a surplus and don’t lift or exercise at all you will gain fat. If you eat at a deficit and don’t lift or exercise you will lose a combination of muscle and fat over time. Though most people find it easier to regain muscle the second time.
A natural lifter that lifts for 5 years and then stops will keep most of the muscle they gained. You will lose a little bit of strength and your muscles may not be as pronounced but they won’t just go away completely. On the other hand if you’re on steroids and you stop lifting yes you will lose a significant amount of muscle Good news is, once you’ve built the muscle it’s much easier to get it back. What took you a year to gain from scratch will only take you about 2 months to get back in shape.
