I’m all for it, providing there is something of value going back to those who donate and the crowdfunder is being honest about what the business plan is. Starting up a business is a huge risk, and many people simply don’t have the resources to do it, and/or are unable to get loans, don’t have family they can borrow from. If the business plan sounds promising and there are individuals who are willing to part with their resources for that purpose, then why not. Go for it, I wish you good luck.
There are many businesses out there that kickstarted with the power and help of crowdfunding. But I would say it’s definitely better etiquette to offer something in return, but crowdfunding in general I have no problem with, especially as part of it is about convincing people to part with their money. And in doing so, they have possibly mitigated a decent amount of risk. They’re receiving donations so they might be able to gauge how popular the idea is and establish customers base early on and then it’s not all their own money gone if it fails.
