If the client doesn’t know what they want or cannot describe it. I have come across this way too many times. They don’t give you enough to write about or build an idea. I usually try to decline the job when this happens. Some clients don’t know how to communicate. Some are straight up rude, some really don’t know how to explain anything or answer my list of questions, some do not answer you for a long while even though their job is urgent. I have learned to let them go rather than try and fail to understand them. Also, I’ve learned to let go of clients who would ask and wanna know about everything else but my rate, how do you tell me you forgot to mention or discuss my rate?

Honestly, a client asking you to reduce your rate is the biggest red flag. But I’d also consider poor communication to be a red flag, as well. If they can’t clearly convey to you what it is that they need, or if they keep changing their mind. Any client who says they have an urgent job is a walking red flag for me. I have fallen for that when I first started but quickly learned that urgent jobs are never urgent. So now I say I don’t accept urgent jobs due to my schedule and the job, all of a sudden, becomes not so urgent.
