You shouldn’t try to reject the thoughts or block them out. But it’s good to notice when they come. And right after you have one, immediately flip the thought and mentally tell yourself the positive version. I’ve been hypercritical all my life and once I actively started to combat it, I’ve only had positive thoughts.
I’ve noticed there’s no shortcut but if you keep at it, over time it gets easier. Until this moment, I’ve never considered this a skill. But maybe it is? And if it’s a skill, anyone can learn it with enough practice. Also, I’ve been surprised by how much journaling about your negative thoughts helps you put things in perspective and help you find the positive aspects.
