The major cause is your choice of diet, when you eat foods and drink beverages that have high levels of added sugars your dental plaque adjusts to the level of sugar you eat and cavity-causing bacteria take over. When you eat sugars, so do your cavity-causing bacteria and they produce an acid by-product as a result of metabolizing added sugars. The more often you eat sugars, the more acid attracts on your teeth and the bacteria and their acids get beneath the enamel surface and start to grow in two directions: towards the nerve and towards the surface. Brushing, flossing, fluoride and dental sealants lower your risk for decay but cannot completely overcome the risk for decay if your diet puts you at risk.
