To what extent can you trust someone who’s lied to you in the past? It’s never easy risking your trust again with someone who already messed you up in the past.

When people break your trust once they are more likely to be the type to do it again, and again. Almost everyone will lie to you in some way, because it is something humans do. It is up to you to figure out if they had malicious intent, or they had other reasons. They broke your trust first, so it’s perfectly normal to not want to trust them again. If they take responsibility and made amends with you it’s up to you whether to open your trust back up or not

Trust is like a wall, you can build it, strengthen it, but you can also break it down. And sometimes, you can ruin the entire foundation of the trust with just a single lie depending on the severity. But it can be rebuild, if both decide to be honest and prove it, show vulnerabilities and talk about why the need to lie was there. A lot of times lies serve two purposes: We lie to avoid being judged and to spare other’s feelings. Usually lies have good intentions, but they obviously have the ugly presumptions that: You’re stupid enough to believe something that I’m making up and that my fear is more important than your trust in me. Everyone is fearful sometimes, it’s human, and a panic reaction can be to lie. The key is to diminish the fear of judgment and thus create a foundation where lies are not necessary. That way, you can build up trust once again. Right after a lie, you should only trust with things that you would not be too hurt about no matter the outcome.
