There’s a worry they will have some sort of infection like hepatitis from the tattoo. But they can donate again after a small waiting period and it’s clear they have no infection. And in situations where there is no a drastic shortage or dire need of blood and they don’t feel the need to change the donation requirements to allow more donations. Blood donation centers can afford to be a little picky.

There are certain criteria that must be met if you want to donate blood. This goes for piercings and all other nonmedical injections on your body, too. Introducing ink, metal, or any other foreign material into your body affects your immune system and may expose you to harmful viruses. This can affect what’s in your bloodstream, especially if you got your tattoo somewhere that isn’t regulated or doesn’t follow safe practices. If there’s a chance that your blood has been compromised, the donation center won’t be able to use it. If your tattoo is less than three months, you are also unable to donate.
