It’s definitely not a rosy situation when your underage child gets pregnant. Raising a child is not easy and it is expensive, let alone adding another. However, in determining what happens to the pregnancy, most states give an underage expectant mother the privilege to give up their babies up for adoption without having the need to get parental permission before placing the child for adoption. However, some states, like Michigan and Pennsylvania, do require the minor to obtain parental consent. It’s important to remember that as the parent of an expectant teenage parent, you can’t force your child to place the baby for adoption. If you support your child’s adoption decision, you can help her by explaining the different types of adoption and encourage her to select the adoptive parents. Giving your daughter the power to decide who will raise her child may seem trivial, but it may help comfort her immediately after the adoption and for many years after.
In most states, once a child gives birth, they become an emancipated adult with full rights to decide what to do with the child, and in most states, a pregnant teen may obtain prenatal care or abortion even without parental consent. Many parents place conditions on their child when they become pregnant – telling them either that they must give the child up for adoption or else they will have to move out, which is sad.
