  • 2

Is it possible for animals to contract the corona virus (Covid-19)? Can they also pass it to others as it is a contagious virus.

Yes please, so you have to be extremely careful. The virus came from an exotic animal at an Asian wet market which in turn got it from biting bats, that go around biting various animals. So it is logical that the virus will happily jump back to an animal. Then from that animal, right back to another human again.. There are nasty coronavirus diseases among pigs and cats. Laboratory experiments where cats were infected with very large doses of Covid-19 showed they could possibly pass on the virus to humans.

Covid-19 came from an animal, so animals can clearly catch it although how much it affects them will vary. Maybe not at all. We don’t have enough information on animals testing positive. If they show no symptoms, there isn’t usually a reason to test them, so no data is gathered. Zoonotic diseases like this one happen, it’s a fact of life. Humans also pass viruses to animals, which is how the dog who tested positive was found: it’s owners testes positive first and someone thought to test the dog on a whim.
