As early as possible especially if you are sexually active or have a family history of cervical cancer. Pap smears are effective for early detection of cervical cancer, but every woman has to decide for herself, after consultation with her medical practitioner, what medical procedures – including testing – she will have. Doctors will recommend pap smears to women because the earlier abnormalities are detected, the better the prognosis for most women. Cervical cancer doesn’t wait for you to reach a certain age.
Every woman should get their first pap smear by age 21. They might also want to discuss effective birth control options with their gynecologist at that time, even if they don’t need birth control at the moment. Knowing your options is always a good thing. If they are sexually active they should get Pap smears as frequently as their gynecologist recommends. Now that many women have the HPV vaccine, the vaccinated may not need annual pap smears. The Pap smear is to detect cervical (pre-)cancer, which is now known to be caused by the HPV virus.
