You will need top quantitative skills. There are many business graduates cannot properly read financial statements to determine what is going on with a company. You need good business acumen to make sense of all of the numbers. You need good research skills and accounting knowledge to uncover all the subtleties management is trying to spin. You will need solid economic understanding to see how the numbers behave in various market environments. It is one thing to make an assessment as to what has happened, a good financial analyst will be able to take that assessment and provide guidance and insight as to what likely will happen. And if a certain outcome occurs, will be able to quickly measure the impact and offer strategies to exploit it.
As a financial analyst, your job every year turns more and more technical. An analyst that has the accounting chops and knows Visual Basic (macro writing in excel) is going to get the job almost every time over a candidate without that skill set. I would recommend learning accounting and pick up a SQL book, Microsoft Access, databases or Visual Basic.
