SmugMug is a very good fit if you are a portrait, wedding or sports photographer and need a place where you can put your client’s photos for them to review and purchase prints or print packages. I think there are about a dozen sites that are good for that kind of selling. Search on “smugmug reviews” and you should find some multi-site comparison reviews.
While you are at it, search for “selling stock photos.” The stock photo companies are specialists in marketing technically perfect and aesthetically pleasing photos. In film days, many working photographers earned the majority of their income this way, by getting royalty payments every time that photo was reprinted in a publication. In the digital world, this market has changed to one where the royalties are now pennies instead of dollars. In today’s stock photo market, instead a few dozen superb images, you need thousands of them, equally superb.
Currently, several apps let you sell your photos for cash. These apps allow you to market your pictures in their marketplace. Not all apps are the same though – some are better than others.
Foap— is a free app that is available for both iOS and Android. After signing up, the app lets you upload your photos and sell them on the Foap Marketplace. Foap’s approval process is based on member ratings. You have to rate 5 user photo submissions every time you upload a photo. For your photos to get accepted, you will need positive ratings from other users. To start making money using Foap, download the app and create an account. You can then upload photos or take them directly using the app.
Shutterstock— Shutterstock is big name in the photo selling industry with over 180 million photos, vectors, and clips. All photo enthusiasts are welcome to join Shutterstock. The pay is low, but you can still earn some cash on the side. If you are starting out, I recommend this app. Typically, the payment is 20-30 percent of the sale. If you want to make additional money, you can refer your friends through Shutterstock’s affiliate program.
