Strangely, people always wonder what are the good sides of schizophrenia, not realizing that what they are saying is that, negative health experiences must have meaning. And, there are many people who believe that if something happens to us, surely there is a reason, and something “good” to reflect on. If someone asks someone who has broken a leg, what are the advantages?, would you agree with me that maybe that person is also hinting that the person did this deliberately to himself/herself and is getting away with speedy airport clearance, and extracting lots of sympathy? I believe that what you are saying is that schizophrenia is so peculiar a condition, that there must surely be something valuable in it. The only books I know of that tackle this kind of question are Shamans Among Us: Schizophrenia, Shamanism, and the Evolutionary Origins of Religion by Joseph Polimeni, and The Madness of Adam and Eve by David Horrobin, both expressing the belief that there is an evolutionary advantage to the condition. Many people can and do recover from schizophrenia, just like others can and do recover from other health concerns.

Creativity— A lot of our most famous poets, artists, writers etc have (had) mental illnesses. While it is true to say their lives ranged from difficult to brutal it’s also true to say they left a lot of beautiful, creative things for the world to fawn over. I can be incredibly creative and that’s cool, but I can loose that skill for months or years due to mood and cognitive functioning issues, which isn’t so cool.
