Since deceitfulness, lying, aliases, and defrauding others for personal profit or pleasure, are traits of sociopathy, it seems unlikely that a sociopath would not be self-aware of such personal traits, even if not diagnosing themselves. Moreover, given the public knowledge of sociopathy/psychopathy, it would take considerable denial to not be aware of one’s own traits; but, denial is a known human trait.
I think they actually do realize they’ve a mental illness, but would deny that they are sociopathic. I don’t think the guy I knew was aware. And I think that he had narcissistic tendencies, but the empathy was faked. So, I don’t think that they are aware. They’re pretty normal to themselves.
