I was recently told to avoid using makeup wipes on my face, reason being that it contributes to skin rashes and breakouts. How true is this?
I usually only use makeup wipes if I’m travelling or when I come home after a night out, otherwise I use micellar water to remove my makeup – and I still wash my face after using it. I think in general, be makeup wipes or micellar water, it’s always good to use something really gentle on the face to remove the products residue. If I need to remove eye makeup or heavier face makeup, I use massage in a few drops of pure jojoba oil first (you can get a giant bottle that will last forever from Amazon for like $10) and then use the baby wipes. But then, that’s what works for me, not every skin is the same, so just do whatever works for you
It’s not like wipes are inherently bad for your skin, it’s more in how they’re used that has averse affects on your skin. A lot of skin care professionals advise against them to remove your makeup because when using them as a makeup remover, or first step in skin care, people have a tendency to rub the skin on their face hard. It’s important to be gentle with your skin, so when it comes to makeup removal, a lot of people recommend an oil-based balm to melt the makeup off your skin as the first cleanse, and then a normal cleanser as a second cleanse. Not to mention, many people use it in place of a cleanser which isn’t very appropriate since it doesn’t take off all of the makeup. When using wipes people tend to be harsh with their skin, and tugging can result in speeding up the formation of lines and stretch your skin. However, if used gently, I’d say it’s fine to take off makeup as long as it’s not used as a substitute for cleansing.
