Glass can be recycled over and over again but it is heavy and more expensive to package and transport which makes it less desirable financially. Plastic is lighter and thus easier to transport and take to processing facilities, you can not compress glass bottles into easy to load bundles. This makes it easier to handle for recycling.

Glass bottles can be recycled pretty much as many times as you want to. Melt it down and reform it into whatever you want and it is just as strong the 20th time as it was the first time. I would say the big issue with glass bottles is just the safety side of things for the handlers.
