It’s different from shelter to shelter. The shelter closest to me does a very quick interview. The director of the shelter just wants to make sure the dog is going to a good home. Once he is sure you’re not abusive, the next step is to see if there is a dog you like and available. If not, he will take your name and phone number to contact you when the special dog shows up. The best thing is going to your local shelter and talking to them. It is in a shelter’s best interest to make sure each dog goes to a caring and appropriate home, so they will do their best to find the perfect match for you.
Adopting a rescue dog can be so frustrating and I hope you are ready for the troubles, basically just visit any dog shelter home around you and pick up a form. Some rescues make it damn near impossible to adopt from. I understand they want great homes for their dogs but some of their requirements. One rescue by us has a contract that the dog may never be left alone inside a fenced in yard. Like, I would never leave my dog outside while I’m gone, but on a nice sunny day my older dog refuses to come inside. I can’t be in the yard for hours just to watch a dog passed out in the sun. And some won’t adopt to people in apartments, probably they seem them as irresponsible.. Some won’t adopt to you without a six foot fence. All sorts of unnecessary barriers.
