Have you ever had a satisfying moment as an adult?
Eating just the pepperonis off of a pizza! I was newly homeless, not yet driving age, but I had a job at a pizza joint. See lessNo, being on my own, managing my own survival did not inspire adult like feelings.
I was so busy trying to find places to sleep, trying to stay in school, trying to find clothes, and brush my teeth and wash my hair. Oh and drying my hair! That was a really hard one, I really didn’t want anyone to know I was homeless. Not just fear of bullies, but the natural teen desire to be liked and accepted. Homeless does not lend itself to satiating teen desires.
It wasn’t until I had finally found a room to rent, a pretty sketchy one at that. That I finally brought home my own pizza for dinner. Not unusual for a kid working at Domino’s, but for some reason, finally feeling a little independent and a little safe, I had the oddest realization that I could just pluck the pepperoni’s off and eat them, my favorite part of the pizza.
I wish there were better words to describe such a seemingly simple act that had such a profound effect on me.
But for the first time, I felt like my own person, capable, decision making, mature. I don’t want to give full credit to pepperoni but something pivotal did kick in. It was clearly very early and young, but it was something that led me to make more adult like decisions about my health, safety and security.
As an employer, if your valuable worker requests for a raise but you refuse to oblige, even though you know they deserve it, what would you do if they try to resign because of that?

A business and an employee are supposed to agree on a compensation package based on how valuable the employee is, and how much they want the job. Your employee apparently concluded that he was worth more than he was getting paid, you couldn’t or wouldn’t pay what he was worth, and so he is willing to leave to find a company that would. The fact that you need him is irrelevant, capitalism doesn’t care about your needs. It cares about what you can pay for.
See lessNow, if the employee genuinely isn’t worth what he was asking for, you don’t want him back. Find someone else who will take what you’re offering.
If the employee is worth what he was asking, then you tried to cheat him. If he’s worth what he asked, but the company can’t afford it, then your company is in trouble. You can try to figure out what you can offer besides more money, but that sounds like shaky position to be in.
