The thing with lucid dreaming is: there is awareness that we are in a dream. You could say that this awareness exists in the dream and is thus part of the dream. The only reference you have is your recollection afterwards, memory. But if we would call this dream and not awareness, then where do we make a difference between lucid dream and memories of the past. Because both are recollections, memory. And we cannot truly verify if they happened as we recall- which is a large problem with memory in general, gaps in memory are easily filled with things that did not happen as we recall them. It’s a difficult question to answer in my opinion due to this dream state being on the edge of sleep and wake.
