Mentally I progressed and she did not. Still parroting what others say to be accepted without any original thought, still adopting other people’s interests to make herself interesting, still using the same derogatory playground insults most of us grew out of. It wasn’t obvious until I went a year without seeing her, then I realised most of the things I liked about her were an act and the things that were authentically her were dislikable. I went away to college and I remember getting back and just, nothing had changed with her. The same high school drama was still going on. The same fighting over the same terrible guys, the petty needling, she, at some point was even trying to maintain the same high school hierarchy. It was just dumb.

Whenever possible, I carry around things with me that can either block out or distract me from bad sensory input, such as noise cancelling headphones, sunglasses, my favorite perfume or other nice smelling things, weighted blanket, fidget toys. It may help if you write a list of particular environments or situations that can result in sensory overload and give yourself permission to avoid or limit your exposure to them. Don’t put yourself in situations that you know will lead to overload just because you feel like you should. Your sensory needs are real and you deserve to be comfortable.

According to online IQ tests I’m borderline genius. They give you inflated scores because they want to sell you the certificate and detailed results. Sometimes you have to give them an email address to send the results to, the email address is all that they are interested in getting. It’s amazing what you can get people to do if you tickle their ego. Think of professional IQ tests as measurements with random errors of from 5 to 10%. A random number generator will generate a number that matches whatever you want, if you have it respond enough times. A real IQ test is administered by a psychologist and can take over an hour. Online tests consist of silly questions, mostly, and are not as reliable.
