      Individual debts only become joint debts when you’re married, if you’re not yet married to your partner, you have no obligations to help offset their loans for them except you wish to.       Individual debts only become joint debts when you’re married, if you’re not yet married to your partner, you have no obligations to help offset their loans for them except you wish to. Being expected to contribute to the debt would be a major red flag for me. Before I started dating my girlfriend, she had a significant credit card debt plus car loan. She dealt with her debt by herself while I was okay with her not contributing to the dates during that period. I consider this a healthy solution.
