It all boils down to what kind of 3d models you want to print— Creating organic forms such as characters, and various other artistic sculptural pieces.. Blender and other modelling software will give you a lot of control and flexibility. Stuff can be easily achieved in minutes Blender. These same skill will easily translate to animation and game art projects. Accurate measurements are tricky and require some dexterity and patience. File formats required by certain industrial 3d printers are sometimes not native, hence you will need to use stuff like meshlab or netfab to make those exports.
