Of course. You can learn from the mistakes they have made that hopefully you won’t have to make in your endeavor. That is the great thing of sharing our knowledge with others, as we can all help each other in reaching our goals and by hearing of others’ mistakes in whatever endeavor we are pursuing. It can greatly speed up our learning curve and get you closer to reaching your goal without getting hung up with known mistakes that others’ have shared and that you do not want to have to go through.
Always “pass it down the line” so to speak and share your knowledge and wisdom with others so they can benefit from your trials and tribulations as well. That is what is so great with the internet these days is that information is at our fingertips and such a wealth of that information everywhere.
To sum up I think I would trust both types of individuals….one who has tried and failed and one who is successful. I think the person who has become successful without any failures is considered lucky as there have been so many individuals who didn’t prosper the first time around but rather kept trying and never gave up, learned from their mistakes and were the better for it in the long run.

In whatever measure you choose, make sure you out his safety first and don’t let the spirit manipulate him.
