There was nothing that made me feel useless like my little guy trying to communicate with me and I being too stupid to understand. I almost started crying a few times when he was saying something that I couldn’t understand.
What we did was took him to the health department to have his hearing tested. It was fine. The speech pathologist talked to him for awhile and was certain he was at least if not more than average intelligence. He was pronouncing no beginning or ending sounds. He didn’t have a physical problem that was keeping him from talking. These were all a relief but still didn’t have an easy answer. He worked with the speech therapist daily for an hour for the first 2 years then 3 times a week once he got into 4th grade. Then once a week until he got out of 6th grade. It was intense but it worked and worked good. He had a college level vocabulary in 6th grade.
He still mumbles some but where we live in Oklahoma it seems to be almost an accent to mumble so mumbling doesn’t concern me. You should have your son evaluated as quickly as possible to get him in therapy. I had a feeling when he was younger but didn’t get him in for an evaluation until he was 4 years old. Everyone kept saying to wait and see. I wish I would have got him in sooner.
