I was in a relationship with a clinically depressed girl for 5 years, and I’m relieved to find a name for this particular kind of emotional abuse. She never did anything like turning off my alarm or pouring out my shampoo, but we fought constantly over things I’d said or done that I had no recollection of. I have a fairly shoddy memory, so it’s possible I could have honestly forgotten a few details here and there, but she started to win those types of arguments by default and I’m convinced that over time she exploited the situation to gain power capital. Tellingly, this inversely convenient amnesia failed to follow me into my next relationship.
