A hole in a tooth is a cavity. As bacteria and acid continue to breach the tooth’s enamel, the cavity grows and tooth decay continues — unless the person receives professional treatment. Cavities do not hurt in their early stages, and they are easier for dentists to treat when they are small and painless. Frequent snacking on sugary drinks, sweets, and starches can play a role in developing tooth decay. These foods and beverages interact with bacteria in the mouth to create acid, which can erode the enamel of the teeth.
Without a dentist’s care, this acid eats away at the enamel and cavities form.

Canned food isn’t that unhealthy. Yeah, it may be overcooked, and it’s packed in salt water or preservatives, and some of the nutrients are washed out or cooked out, but it’s a convenient, long-shelf-life form of food, easily transported and stored, so it makes possible out of season or perishable foods that once were available only for the briefest of seasons. One can eat a lot of it without ill effects. The canning technology has improved, so that metals poisoning is no longer an issue, and so that botulism and other bacterial toxins are no issue.
