Yes it can affecting breathing, especially if you are prone to having some difficulties breathing due to a pre-existing condition or you engage in an intense physical activity. Apart from the impedance placed on air passage through the nose and the mouth by the mask, the exhaled air retained beneath the mask cloth cup, laden with high levels of carbon dioxide and low levels of oxygen, will be reinhaled. These two events will lead to shortness of breath.
