The brain is supposed to recognize good from bad. Good things to eat, for instance, should be remembered and appreciated, bad things that poison you or give you tommy ache should be avoided. So the brain is wired to go back to good and get addicted to it. Addiction is part of a protection that nature builds for us in our brain. Addiction is not only to substances, it can be to activities. We are wired for pleasure. Now the brain is not smart by itself and it makes mistakes: one can get addicted to bad stuff ranging from bad drugs to gambling, to crime.

I’ve tried arguing with them before, it’s fruitless, they have a handful of memorised passages they believe are relevant for every situation, and nothing you say is really heard.
It’s better to just keep ignoring them, don’t make eye contact, they assume it’s an invitation and if they do single you out, don’t acknowledge, that’s a win for them, in their mind you’re on the hook if you so much as break your step. If there’s no other choice, a firm “not interested” is all you need, as you step around and carry on, insults are a cue for a sermon, criticism is cue for a sermon and attention is a cue for a sermon, it’s best just to let it go, keep walking, and ignore their attempts to get your attention.
