Aside from not being able to personalize your desktop, change color themes, the “Activate Windows” watermark; and the nagging about needing to activate, there’s really nothing to it. The OS will still behave as it should, you’ll still be able to install apps but you may not be able to customize the icons, and it will still pull down security updates. Microsoft decided that petty annoyances like those were sufficient penance for not coughing up the cost of a license.
