How to Remove Stains From Clothing: Blood, Grease, Grass, Oil, and More

Stains can be frustrating, but with the right techniques, you can effectively remove them. Here’s how to tackle some common stains:

1. Blood Stains

  • Act Quickly: Rinse with cold water to remove as much blood as possible.
  • Soak: Use a mixture of cold water and salt (or baking soda) for 30 minutes.
  • Wash: Launder with cold water. If needed, repeat with hydrogen peroxide.

2. Grease Stains

  • Blot: Gently blot the stain with a paper towel to absorb excess grease.
  • Apply Dish Soap: Rub a few drops of dish soap directly onto the stain.
  • Rinse and Wash: Rinse with warm water and wash as usual.

3. Grass Stains

  • Pre-treat: Apply a mixture of white vinegar and dish soap to the stain.
  • Scrub: Use a soft brush or cloth to gently scrub the area.
  • Wash: Launder in the hottest water safe for the fabric.

4. Oil Stains

  • Absorb: Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the stain to absorb oil for 15-30 minutes.
  • Brush Off: Gently brush away the powder.
  • Wash: Apply a liquid laundry detergent and wash as usual.

5. Red Wine Stains

  • Blot: Immediately blot with a clean cloth.
  • Sprinkle Salt: Cover the stain with salt to absorb the wine.
  • Rinse: After a few minutes, rinse with cold water and wash.

6. Coffee Stains

  • Blot: Blot the stain with cold water.
  • Mix Solution: Combine equal parts white vinegar and water; apply to the stain.
  • Wash: Launder as usual.

7. Ink Stains

  • Dab: Use rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball and dab the stain.
  • Blot: Blot with a clean cloth until the stain lifts.
  • Wash: Rinse and wash as normal.

General Tips:

  • Test First: Always test stain removal methods on a small, inconspicuous area first.
  • Avoid Heat: Do not use heat (like a dryer) until you’re sure the stain is gone, as heat can set stains.
  • Act Fast: The sooner you treat a stain, the easier it will be to remove.

By using these methods, you can effectively remove stubborn stains and keep your clothing looking fresh.
