With all the sophisticated methods that hackers hold up their sleeve, it may seem impossible to distinguish between suspicious emails and legitimate messages. Educating yourself on a few key parameters can provide better protection for your data and your computer. What this means is that you can actually receive an email from a good friend with a dangerous email attachment. While the malicious email attachment was sent from your friend’s account, your friend did not actually send the email, but the person who hacked into his or her account did. Some emails may appear professional but vague, and then curious, and average users become slightly concerned and tend to open the attachment to try to figure out what is wrong with their accounts. So you really just have to be careful while educating and updating yourself on how these things work.

Don’t open attachments that you’re not expecting, or from users who you don’t know. This is almost certainly something you shouldn’t open. Instead, immediately flag it as spam and remove it from your inbox. The text of the email can offer some clues about whether the message and any attachment is trustworthy.
