Poverty isn’t necessarily traumatic in and of itself. However, we know that poverty can and often does bring with it many kinds of traumatic experiences because of the stress that accompanies it. Also sometimes families are poor because one or more parent is unable to function normally and trauma is introduced in this manner.
I grew up super poor with emotionally abusive parents who fought everyday and didn’t hide anything from us in terms of their hardships economically. I grew up in fear of homelessness even till after I finished university because of our economic issues. You will never really can’t escape your feelings completely. You can get over some of it bit by bit, but I think some of it is always with you and that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. I know how to make the most of what I have, how to eat cheaply, how to do without, and how to live on less money than other people.
