  1. Individual debts only become joint debts when you’re married, if you’re not yet married to your partner, you have no obligations to help offset their loans for them except you wish to. Being expected to contribute to the debt would be a major red flag for me. Before I started dating my girlfriend, she had a significant credit card debt plus car loan. She dealt with her debt by herself while I was okay with her not contributing to the dates during that period. I consider this a healthy solution.

  2. I think it depends on alot how you two decide on your finances together. I’d like to work on the things we share a common account for things like rent, food etc. If she had a ton of debt, I would be open to giving extra into the things we share account, so she can divert all her money into her debt to pay it off. But if she just says, I want you to pay 5k of my 20k loan just because we’re dating, I won’t cos that’s just plain gold digging.
