  1. Your work is automatically copyrighted, though it’s always good to put a copyright page in it. Registering a copyright with the government really doesn’t get you much. The big thing is you can sue for statutory damages rather than actual damages if someone pirates it. The chances of actually finding someone you can sue and doing so is pretty minimal though, so it’s probably not worth it unless your book takes off big time.

  2. Your work is copyrighted the instant you write it in any fixed form. The only thing registering copyright does is allows you to sue someone for a higher sum if they infringe it and really, the chances that they have any money to go after at all is somewhere between slim and none.
