The abortion pill involves taking two medicines, mifepristone and misoprostol. The first medicine, mifepristone, ends the pregnancy. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone. Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus breaks down and the pregnancy cannot continue. The second medicine, misoprostol, makes the womb contract causing cramping, bleeding and loss of the pregnancy similar to a miscarriage.
You can get the abortion pill from a doctor, nurse, health clinic, or Planned Parenthood health center. You may be able to get the abortion pill for free or low cost. Your abortion may be free or low-cost with health insurance. Some insurance plans don’t cover abortions. You can call your insurance provider directly to find out their policies.
