If it is a new car and the warranty demands that synthetic oil must be used, then it is necessary. Otherwise it is not necessary but advisable. The small extra cost of the oil gives a longer oil change period and the synthetic oil is much more resistant against degradation.
If you are driving a later model car that specifies synthetic oil, by all means, it’s the oil to use. If you’re driving a 1995 Chevy Surburban, stay away from it. In older vehicles with higher mileage synthetic will leak past gaskets and you will have oil leaking everywhere. The reason is the molecules are smaller and the oil is slippery than conventional oil. Synthetic is superior to conventional as it flows better in cold weather and doesn’t break down in higher temps. One can put on more miles between changes as well. I’ve experienced the leakage in more than one older vehicles. Other than that, I would use it in any vehicle.
